Union College Homecoming 2010

It is a busy week here at Union College and the weather could not be more beautiful.  The students are having a grand time participating in the many activities planned in celebration of Homecoming 2010.  Come this weekend, Union will be welcoming a great number of alumni to campus for a wide variety of planned activities, including the Homecoming football game and Banquet.

I want to highlight the Homecoming Worship Service, which takes place this Sunday, October 24th at 11:00 a.m. I am particularly encouraged to see Union embrace its Methodist (Christian) heritage as First United Methodist Church of Barbourville and the college come together for a time of worship in Conway Boatman Chapel. The service is a joint venture that includes Rev. Ernie Carmicle (Minister, FUMC, Barbourville), Rev. David Miller (UC Campus Minister), as well as, Union College alumni, and current UC students and faculty.  President Ed de Rosset will offer a greeting and Dr. Jim Garrett, Professor of English, will offer a prayer.

The message will be brought by alumnus, Steve Poteet-Marshall who is currently Pastor of Walnut Methodist Church, Walnut, California.  Serving as organist for the service, Kay Dawn McFarland is not only an alumna of Union College, but also serves as organist at Barbourville’s First United Methodist Church. UC alumna and Minister of Music at Barbourville FUMC, Paula Frase will lead the hymns and Kathy Smith, UC staff accompanist will accompany Union Harmony as they sing both the choral introit and the anthem. Harmony is one of the three choirs I direct here at the college.  It is a select group of eight very talented singers.  This year Harmony will sing the anthem in memory of Allan Green, Professor of Music, who faithfully served Union College for thirty-eight years.

I want to encourage students, alumni, faculty, staff, and all other friends of the college and FUMC, Barbourville to come to the 2010 Homecoming Service, which will be held this Sunday, October 24, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in Conway Boatman Chapel.  I hope to see you there!

Blessings…
