Performance Space

Conway Boatman Chapel at Union College is a wonderful performing space. Aesthetically it is quite appealing, but more importantly the acoustics are exceptional for ensemble singing. It also boasts a very fine organ. One of the reasons I was attracted to Union was because of this very fine performing space.

The performance space is so important for a choral ensemble. If you do not have an ideal space in which to perform, perhaps you could look at area churches to see if the acoustics, platform, organ, etc... are suitable and if the church could be made available to you. If you are a church musician and are in a church that has a lot of carpet, cushioned pews, etc... that absorb all reverberation, your location is obviously set. However, there are some things that can be done in terms of vocal placement within the choir. I will perhaps address that in a future post.
